History of the Market Hall
Brecon has always been a thriving market town. This dates back to Norman times, when the town grew around the castle and became an important trading centre for the region. Regular livestock markets were held in the town, and the Guildhall in the centre of Brecon, built in 1624, originally housed a butter market. The market moved to its current location (on the site of the old Queen’s Head Inn) in 1838, with the existing Victorian building constructed in 1897.
The Market Hall remains an important part of Brecon’s town centre, housing permanent shops in its arcade and hosting regular markets in the hall. It also plays an important role in community life as a venue for special events, concerts, festivals and more.
The hall has a rich music history, transforming into a 500 capacity venue during the annual Brecon Jazz Festival. Over the years the hall has hosted many internationally renowned musicians, including Burt Bacharach, George Melly, Dionne Warwick, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse and Jools Holland!
